Solution
The expansion of Dean College’s student population had put their dining facilities, performance arts and student activity programs at their capacity. Connor Architecture was asked to prepare a masterplan not only to satisfy the college’s programmatic needs but to inspire enthusiasm for the functions that would have a home in the building. The dramatic changes proposed where the relocating of the existing enclosed dining hall from second floor to the ground floor double height atrium space. A new monumental stair was added drama and a sense of entry between the main floor. A new student life suite, bookstore and private viewing theater was added to the ground floor as well. To address the growing performance arts program, layout improvements where made to the existing performance hall and a “black box” addition was proposed. A new enclosed skylit entry was also created to give a sense of ceremony and a common entrance for the two performance arts venues.
