K2 offers a unique alternative to the typical dining experience in the MIT Community at Kendall Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This renovated mill building with high ceilings and exposed structure offered tons of potential. A resourceful variety of construction materials were used to transform bones of the building – exposed ceiling bar joists hung at varied heights while floating planes of corrugated metal and abstract cut-outs created the walls. Industrial-style lighting along with colorful carpet and linoleum layered with graphic-patterned laminates and aluminum edged tables were paired with 50’s style kitchen chairs. Comfy vinyl baguettes, diner stools and overstuffed lounge chairs created a dynamic and trendy hangout for the students to dine, study and be social.
